Elevate Your Photography Business: Ditch The Freelancer Label | 77

Jun 09, 2023

This week, we're focusing on how you present yourself to clients. A simple shift in the language you use can be the difference between a high-paying hands-off client, and a low-paying micromanaging client.

Why You Should Stop Calling Yourself a Freelancer

When clients hear the word "freelancer," they often form a perception of someone who's cheap, replaceable, and low-quality.

It's time to embrace what you actually are - a creative business owner. Changing how you present yourself can directly impact how much you can charge and how clients perceive you.

Now you don't have to call yourself a creative biz. Instead, you can use other terms like an agency, a photography company, a production company, etc.

Perception from Clients

For example, let's look at a freelance photographer.

Most clients assume they just set up lights, take photos, and send them over. But in reality, photographers handle creative direction, scene setup, editing, retouching, and so much more.

Calling yourself a creative business, photo production company, or agency can elevate your image. This means you'll attract higher-paying clients, and come across as more professional.

Your Own Perception Matters

Believing in yourself is crucial for success. The different perception of freelancer vs biz owner exists in your head as well.

As a business owner, you start thinking about building a team, expanding your services, and focusing on what's best for the business. This change in mindset will help you grow and reach new heights.

My Experience: From Freelancer to Business Owner

When I first started, I referred to myself as Chris Pieta Photo. Nothing wrong with this name, but it was quite limiting. I just didn't realize it.

But when I made the shift to calling my company Pieta Productions, I noticed an immediate change in perception from clients. Even though it was still mainly me doing the work, clients saw my company as offering a more premium service. As a result, I was able to grow my team, and we started charging more for our services.

How This Change Can Benefit Your Business

By presenting yourself as a creative business, you can:

  1. Attract higher-paying clients
  2. Earn clients' trust
  3. Deliver better end results
  4. Build your team
  5. Expand your service offerings

So, stop calling yourself a freelancer and start embracing your role as a creative business owner. It's a simple change in language that can make a world of difference in your success.
